Airbus UK Broughton 3-1 Conwy Borough: Davies inspires the Bus and breaks Cymru North record

Airbus UK Broughton got back to winning ways following last week’s defeat to Ruthin Town, beating Conwy Borough 3-1 at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium.

Airbus flew out of the traps and dominated proceedings from the get-go. They found themselves three goals to the good at the interval courtesy of two strikes from top scorer, Adam Davies, and a low driven effort from Oli Lanceley.

Conwy substitute Thomas Weir netted for Gareth Thomas’ side in the second period, but it was nothing more than consolation for the visitors on the night.

The win kept the Bus top of the tree and puts them in a great position as they continue to chase promotion back to Welsh football’s premier division.

Steve O’Shaughnessy’s men carved out their first chance of the game on 9 minutes with an Ollie Lanceley header, but Rory Crowther in the Conwy net pulled off a magnificent reflex save to deny the Bus.

A minute later league top scorer Adam Davies shimmied off the right flank, cut inside on his left foot and drilled an effort into the bottom right corner to give Airbus the lead. The goal, which was his 26th of the league campaign, was made even more important with it being the strike that earned Davies the highest scoring player in a single Cymru North season.

Ten minutes later Airbus hit Conwy for a second as full-back Ieuan Hewitt hit an inch-perfect cross across goal for Davies whose poacher instinct was on display to see him grab his double.

Airbus continued to assert their dominance on proceedings and the high press philosophy fans have become so accustomed to seeing from the men in blue was on show yet again. Ollie Lanceley pressured the Conwy back line, forced over position and teed off Jake Eyre on the edge of the box. The ex-Sheffield United man drilled his effort hard and low but somehow Crowther was able to get down low and deny Eyre his second goal of the calendar year.

Eyre’s annoyance to the Conwy defence continued and three minutes on from his first attempt, he struck a second looping effort that initially looked destined for goal but ended up skimming the top of the cross bar much to the delight of the Conwy keeper who could only stand and watch the venomous strike.

Four minutes from the interval Airbus bagged their third of the night and it’s build up was an almost carbon copy of the Eyre’s first saved attempt. This time it was Davies doing the pressing and Lanceley converting for the Bus to put the game beyond reach for Borough.

O’Shaughnessy’s men came out from the break and looked to further frustrate the opposition with a series of keep ball patterns of play which would have been replicated from Rondo style training drills. Another display of Airbus’ ability to switch from high intensity pressing to an impressive tiki-taka keep-ball style of play.

Davies recorded the first real attempt of the second half as he saw his curved effort kiss the Conwy post and trickle out of play.

The visitors brought on Thomas Weir, and it was he who provided a little wakeup call for the Bus. The Conwy side cut through with a period of intricate play on the right and eventually found Weir in a pocket of space who dragged an effort into Lewis Dutton’s goal.

Despite the Conwy goal, it would only be a consolation in the contest as the Bus saw out the remainder of the game and recorded another important victory in the Cymru North Division.
