AIRBUS UK BROUGHTON: APRIL REVIEW

In the month that Airbus UK Broughton clinched the JD Cymru North title, the minds of the players might have been elsewhere, given the somewhat poor results following the confirmation of the trophy win.

The conclusion of the season saw Airbus finish the season on 72 points, nine ahead of second placed Llandudno, with a record of 23 wins, three draws and just two losses; one of those coming in the month of April.

Llandudno (H)

The biggest match of the month, and of the season, came against second placed Llandudno on the first day of the month, with Airbus knowing that a win would confirm that they would be champions of the JD Cymru North.

The match was tense, neither side wanting to give too much away, or risk losing.

Llandudno had the ball in the back of the net early in the second half, but the referee adjudged their striker to have fouled Simon Spender before going through on goal- a luck escape for Airbus.

Airbus assistant manager, Mark Allen, asked the assistant referee "what have we got that free-kick for?", showing the slight fortune that The Wingmakers escaped without conceding.

In the 76th minute, a nasty looking challenge on Adam Davies from Gareth Evans resulted in a red card for the Llandudno player.

It has since been revealed that Davies suffered a tibia and fibula break on his leg, but is hopeful of being fit again at the start of next season.

The match slowed down somewhat in the 10 minutes following the injury, as is often the case when these types of things happen.

However, in the 96th minute, the sixth minute of injury time, the time added on by Adam Davies' injury, substitute Brady McGilloway squeezed the ball into the net, on his first appearance of the season.

The youngster, in his third season with the club, had cemented himself in the Airbus history books.

GRESSFORD ATHLETIC (H)

On the day that Airbus were presented with the JD Cymru North title, fans of both sides were treated to a high scoring, high energy and highly entertaining 90 minutes of football.

It took just six minutes for the champions to take the lead, George Peers tapping home from a Nathan Brown corner.

Another corner from Brown brought the second goal of the game, this time setting up captain Steve Tomassen to head home on the stroke of half-time.

It was a hat-trick of assists for man of the match Brown in the 58th minute, when he set up Oli Lanceley.

Gressford pulled one back on the 66th minute, before Nathan Brown added a goal to his three assists, scoring a one on one with the opposition goalkeeper.

Gressford grabbed another consolation goal two minutes from the end to make it 4-2.

There were, of course, great scenes of celebration following the match, as Airbus lifted the title.

HOLYWELL TOWN (A)

Following the events of the Gressford game, the celebrations and the parties, it was understandable that the Airbus players and staff may have slightly took their eye off the ball for the away match at Holywell Town just three days later.

The hosts, who ended the season fourth, were good value for their 3-2 win on the day, although The Wingmakers did push them all the way.

GUILSFIELD (A)

The final match of the 2021/22 JD Cymru North season for Airbus UK Broughton was also the least eventful.

With both sides knowing their fate, a bore draw was played out as neither team had quite enough to break the deadlock.

Before the December break, Guilsfield appeared to be Airbus' greatest challenge for the league title, so in another world this match could have been the title decider, yet it was not to be the case, and it was a truly action-less match to end the campaign.
